Every Dancer needs to find their inner Beyoncé…

  • By

Every dancer has there insecurities and feels self-conscious at some point in there dancing career. This is a completely normal feeling, however the sooner you find your inner strength and self-confidence the sooner you will develop your dancing skills.

Sometimes dancers are mistaken for being over confident and at times cocky, this is often there dancing alter ego and not the real them.

Take Beyoncé for an example, she is Beyoncé by day and ‘Sasha Fierce’ when she performs. She has created this character to use as a cover up for the real her. Sasha Fierce is a strong, independent woman, who is confident, bold and stands out in a crowd. This alter ego had made her the performer that we all want to be.

‘I have someone else that takes over when it’s time for me to work and when I’m on stage, this alter ego that I’ve created that kind of protects me and who I really am, she is confident and successful and helps me to be the best I can be without letting my insecurities creep in”

Beyoncé Knolls, Sep 2012

So the key is, create yourself a character. Someone who is not scared of being at the front and has self-belief and watch the results unfold. You will no longer be the dancer at the back who is worried what other people think, or the dancer who thinks they look silly if they give it too much energy….you will be the dancer that stands out!

You Should Know Ballerinas Are More Hardcore Than You

  • By

While reading and looking at this post I couldn’t help but think that most of the normal human beings of the world will never understand us dancers.

Ballet is the hardest discipline ever, you are not born a ballerina, you have to earn to be one or any dancer for that matter, it really is blood sweat and tears and anyone telling you any different is lying.

Those of you reading this post that are dancers or have been dancers, its okay to cry, its okay to have injuries, its okay to feel that you want to give up……………this is normal and healthy, the important thing to remember though is to have these bouts of despair then pick yourself back up very quickly, shake them off and continue the struggle to be the best you can be………….the only person judging you is YOU!!

The photos within the posts are not made up, this is real life of the ballerina, but please look at the joyful lady in red, it really is exhilarating to leap and fly through the air, us dancers have the power to do this…….so do it!!

Stretch of the month

  • By

Summer holidays are now over, its time to get your body back into dancers shape through doing different exercise to ensure you are looking after your body and making it ready for the intense year of dance a head.

This exercise will strengthen your core, lengthen your hamstrings, work your shoulders and wrists and open your chest.

Don’t force your heels down to the floor they will fall naturally in time.

The wider your V shape the more pressure is put on your shoulders………be careful

Main key points are:

  1. Toes and fingers must be facing forward so they are parallel
  2. Press your palms in to the floor making sure the weight is even across your hands
  3. Spread your toes wide
  4. Shoulder blades should be rolled back to lengthen the neck
  5. There should be no tension in the neck
  6. There should be a straight line between your tail bone and top of your neck (Don’t be a banana)
  7. Pull up into your belly button as if trying to touch your spine with your belly button
  8. BREATH, this is so important, don’t hold your breath
  9. Stay in the position for 5 long deep breaths then increase the breaths until you can stay there for at least 3mins
  10. If your wrists start to ache come out of the posture by bending your knees to the floor and resting

Do this every day and it will help in all aspects of your dance class………………………………

Intention of a dancer

  • By

Northern Ballets, Midsummers Nights Dream Rehearsal.

I feel this short youtube clip of this rehearsal is what every dancer in ever performance should have: to know the intention of what they are trying to portray through movement.

This clip shows this perfectly, letting the dancers talk through the movements so their bodies and facial expressions can feel how they should be reacting, so when it comes to doing it with no words and to the wonderful music, their bodies remember what the intention is of that particular piece.

In dance its the dancers job to get feelings and story lines across to the audience with no words, but by having words in your mind as a dancer while doing the movement the story will start to form through the body.  We don’t expect the audience to understand the full story, but to show the intention through our movement then the audience will create their own story and feel with the dancer.

I may have to use this technique with my wonderful Flipside contemporary students, to get them to feel more.

What every dancer needs to know!!

This is a little tribute to MJ, learn this iconic dance move shown to us by Alvin Ailey Hip-Hop teacher Jonathan Lee

Try it slow then speed it up, its easier than it looks.
