At Flipside our ballet technique is based on the Imperial Ballet ISTD Syllabus’s giving students strength, balance and poise. Ballet is the foundation and core style of all dance and we do promote our ballet to be as fun and as exciting as possible by teaching the student’s repertoire work as well as strong technique. By doing ballet classes the student will improve in all other dance styles.
At a very young age youngsters like to bop around, Flipside likes to encourage this by offering teeny classes for students 2.5 – 5 years before they move onto the pre school classes or introduction classes in ballet. These classes are to enable students to work with props, use their sense of imagination, to help musicality, creative movement, stretching, strengthening, performance and freedom without the pressures of formal exams.
Contemporary is based on the Cunningham and Graham techniques. It’s a style of dance that is very free, looks effortless, but is very technique and strength orientated. Contemporary is all about movement, expression and often using gravity and floor work. This style of dance is done in bare feet and combines certain elements from jazz, ballet and lyrical.
Flipside Dance School is proud to be affiliated with the Acrobatic Arts exam society. The FSD Acro program is based on safe and effective progressions with proven results in five divisions of AcroDance: Flexibility, Strength, Balancing, Limbering and Tumbling. Developed with input from professionals and experts in ballet, modern dance, jazz, contortion, artistic gymnastics, rhythmic gymnastics, sport acrobatics, yoga, acro yoga, pilates, physiotherapy, hand balancing and more, you will not find a more comprehensive program.
This genre of dance is becoming more and more popular worldwide and Flipside is so happy to be part of the programme, and encourages all students to take a class due to the fantastic body conditioning that all dancers need.
Jazz is an energetic, lively class that incorporates turns, leaps, splits and corner work as well as increasing flexibility. Jazz dance is a mix of new commercial and old Fosse and Cabaret style; lots of jazz hands and smiles are a must within this class.
At Flipside we base our tap on the American tappers of the world, Bill ‘Bojangles’, Fred Astaire, Ginger Rogers. The core foundation is ISTD Syllabus just for the basic steps; we then let the students be expressive. Tap helps all students rhythmically and it is a style to be enjoyed.
Hip Hop/Street dance has evolved so much after the 1970’s when it hit America. Breaking, Locking, Popping, MTV Commercial, Reggaeton, House are all classed as forms of hip hop. Classes are creative and blend original hip hop styles fused with modern commercial moves to the latest hip hop controversial beats. At Flipside we have our own FSD hip hop flavour, keeping us different and unique.
